2012 County Horse Bowls 6:30 p.m. February 3
Horse Bowl is a competition in which kids are asked horse related questions. The first person to hit the buzzer and answer correctly earns a point for their team. In Washington County, we invite all youth ages 8 to 18 to come and participate in our county Horse Bowls. No registration is needed and there are no entry fees. Bring your family and friends to support, cheer, and learn with you.
The Fall bowl is just for fun. It gets everyone excited about studying horse knowledge through the winter. Everyone interested shows up, teams are formed "on-the-spot." The buzzer system is set up and questions are asked, answered, and discussed as we eat pizza supplied by the horse council and desserts brought by the competitors. Score keeping is informal and just for fun.
The winter Bowl, is set up in a similar fashion and we welcome all to participate. However, in addition to fun team scoring, individual scores are also kept in order to determine who will represent our county at the State 4-H Horse Bowl held in March each year. In order to be eligible to compete at the State 4-H Horse Bowl, you must be registered as a Washington County 4-H member, carry a horse project, be in good standing with your club, and be willing to attend team practices leading up to the March competition.
4-H members who make the county teams in each age group will then work hard studying for the State Horse Bowl which will be held at the University of Maryland.
In 2011, our intermediate team placed third in the state and one member placed second in the individual rankings. Our senior team placed second in states with 3 out of the 4 members in the top 15 for individual rankings. These three knowledgeable kids now have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Maryland State team which will compete at the National level in the fall.
